About the WDA Foundation

The year was 1957. Milwaukee earned its only baseball world championship. Sputnik was the first artificial satellite launched into space. Dr. John Borden, invented a hand-held drill that obtained speeds of up to 300,000 rotations per minute, reducing the time it took to prepare a tooth for filling. And the Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation was established.

The Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was developed in response to dentists’ requests for a way to provide tax-deductible contributions to charitable, scientific and educational oral health endeavors – particularly in the dental science and public health arenas.

Through the years, oral diseases and conditions continue to result in needless pain and suffering, difficulty in speaking, chewing and swallowing, increased costs of care, loss of self-esteem, loss of work and school days and, in extreme cases, they can even lead to death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 40 percent of low-income adults have at least one untreated decayed tooth, compared to 16 percent of non-poor adults.

The U.S. Surgeon General recognizes oral health as an integral part of a person’s total health. No one can be truly healthy unless he or she is free from the burden of oral diseases and conditions.

The WDA Foundation recognizes these issues and stands up for:

• Improved oral health for all Wisconsin residents
• Full support for those who provide oral care
• Paving the way for tomorrow’s dental professionals

Our Mission:

The Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation is committed to improving the oral health and overall well-being of Wisconsin residents while supporting the needs of the dental community.

Our Goals:

Undertaking select signature projects that will provide the greatest oral health outcomes for our population

• To assist the population-at-large through programs such as Mission of Mercy
• To bring oral health to the medically-compromised and senior populations through programs such as Donated Dental Services
• To extend our reach throughout the state by supporting independent non-profit programs and projects by providing annual grants
• To assure the future of dentistry through scholarships to deserving dental and dental hygiene students.
• To maintain a Relief Fund to help bring stability to the lives of dentists and dental families in crisis.

The Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation, Inc. is the WDA’s affiliated charity and home to its charitable programs. The organizations are separate legal bodies and are exempt under different sections of the Internal Revenue Code. The WDA Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, while the WDA is a 501(c)(6) non-profit entity. The Foundation is guided by individual bylaws and is governed by a separate volunteer Board of Directors.

All donations to the WDA Foundation are deductible to the full extent of the law.
