Individuals must be 18 years of age at the time of the event to volunteer at Mission of Mercy. The only exceptions are volunteers working set up, teardown, data entry, patient registration, volunteer registration and hospitality. The minimum age for those positions is 16. We are unable to make exceptions to these age limits.

WDA Mission of Mercy 2020
This year marks the 10th Mission of Mercy for the WDA and WDA Foundation. We thank our volunteers and donors for your continued support.
Volunteer registration will open March 2, 2020.

- Volunteer check-in will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. if volunteers would like to come by early to pick up their registration materials and tour the clinic.
- Treatment: Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13
- Doors open 5:30 a.m. Patients seen on first-come, first-served basis with approximately 1,000 individuals treated each day.
- Teardown: Saturday, June 13 from clinic close to completion

The same Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Centers for Disease Control guidelines that apply in the dental office also apply at MOM. Clinicians should bring their own protective eyewear. Eyewear is provided only to those working in sterilization.
Everyone treating patients, as well as those in sterilization, will be required to wear clinic gowns. Masks, gloves and disposable gowns will be provided; however, you may prefer to bring your own for personal use.
Specific products are not guaranteed, because supplies are donated whenever possible. If you prefer to use a specific instrument or material, please bring your own.
There is a process to help ensure you get your personal instruments back after they have been sterilized. Bringing your instruments in cassettes helps save time; otherwise, each instrument is individually bagged.
There will be a stool for every dentist and dental hygienist working in restorative, endodontics and hygiene. However, there will not be enough stools for all assistants. Please consider bringing a stool or two from your office, especially if you have a comfortable one that you like to sit on.
Please leave valuables at home or lock them up out of sight in the trunk of your vehicle. There will not be a secured area to leave personal belongings, such as purses, car keys, cell phones, etc.
Small, zippered-pouch name badge holders will be available and are good for holding a couple keys, but that’s about all.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for volunteers on site in a break room away from the clinic floor.
Because most of the food served is donated, we can’t guarantee that every special dietary need can or will be accommodated. Please plan accordingly.
Only water in a covered cup or bottle is allowed on the clinic floor. No open-top beverages will be allowed.
Dress comfortably. You will be doing a lot of walking or standing, so comfortable, close-toed shoes are a must.
All volunteers will receive a short-sleeve T-shirt. Please wear the shirts provided, so you can easily be identified as a volunteer. Wear pants, jeans, shorts or skirts – whichever you prefer. Shorts and skirts should be of a length that is appropriate for a professional atmosphere.
Every effort is made to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the clinic, but it is nearly impossible for it to be comfortable for everyone in such a large group. Therefore, you may choose to wear layers under your volunteer T-shirt or a sweater or jacket that allows your shirt to show.
As noted under “What to bring,” clinicians should bring their own protective eyewear. Dental gowns are required on the clinic floor for all dentists, hygienists and assistants. One-size-fits-all dental gowns will be provided.
Dental and medical professionals may work in one of the areas listed after their job title or may choose to volunteer in any of the non-dental positions. All dentists and hygienists delivering patient care must hold a current Wisconsin license. Every dental/medical volunteer listed below must have current heptavax shots if working any of the dental/medical positions. All work is done under local anesthetic; no nitrous or sedation will be available.
Dentists: Those with a current, unrestricted Wisconsin dental license may work in the following areas: dental triage (initial oral exam), routing (determining which care will be provided), local anesthesia (administering local for either restorative or oral surgery patients), oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics (taking impressions and fitting treatment partials), pediatric dentistry, Special Olympics, hygiene, assisting, sterilization, or radiology.
Dental Hygienists: Those with a current, unrestricted Wisconsin dental hygienist license to work in the following areas: hygiene, Special Olympics, sterilization, assisting, patient education, medical triage or radiology.
Dental Assistants: Experienced dental assistants to assist in: dental triage (scribing for initial oral exam), oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, Special Olympics, sterilization, patient education, medical triage and radiology.
X-Ray Technicians: Individuals with appropriate training and experience to provide or assist with panoramic and intraoral x-rays.
Lab Technicians: Individuals with appropriate training and experience to fabricate, or repair oral prosthetics, including treatment partials.
Dental Equipment Techs: Individuals with appropriate training and experience to set up, maintain, and tear down dental equipment.
Front Office Staff/Billing Clerks: Any non-dental position.
Dental Students: Dental students should sign up for any non-dental position, dental assistant, sterilization, radiology, hygiene support, central supply or patient education. Clinical positions not filled prior to the event by licensed dentists will be assigned to only those students that meet the criteria defined by the MUSoD. All students working in restorative or anesthetic will be under direct supervision of a faculty member.
Hygiene/Assisting Students: Sign up for any non-dental position, patient education or sterilization. If already trained in panoramic or intraoral x-rays, may also volunteer in radiology.
LPN, RN, Nursing Students, Physician, Physician Assistants, and Nurse’s Aid: Medical triage, sterilization or radiology if trained in panoramic or intraoral x-rays.
EMTs: To be available with necessary equipment during treatment hours
Pharmacist/Pharmacy Tech/Pharmacy Student: Onsite pharmacy
Sterilization Specialists: Sterilizing instruments and equipment

Medical Triage – conduct a medical history screening, check blood pressure and as needed check blood glucose levels or INR’s
Dental Triage Dentist – complete initial oral exam
Dental Triage Assistant – scribe for dentist completing exam
Assistant – assist dentists in restorative, oral surgery, pediatrics, all assistants sign up for a generic assisting shift regardless of department you will/wish to be assisting in; once onsite we will match you with your dentist (employer), those without a dentist onsite will be paired with an available dentist, those with oral surgery or pediatric experience will receive first opportunity to work in those areas when openings exist
Dental Hygienist – perform cleanings with or without a cavitron
Routing – assign patient to treatment area based on priority assigned in triage
Radiology – take or assist in panoramic or intraoral x-rays
Anesthetic – deliver local anesthetic to patients prior to treatment in restorative or oral surgery areas
Restorative – provide amalgam or composite fillings, option to provide limited oral surgery if willing and able if you deem a tooth is not restorable
Endo – RCT’s performed on restorable anterior teeth and/or on restorable and critical abutment teeth for removable or fixed prosthesis
Oral Surgery – extractions under local anesthetic
Pediatrics – diagnosis and treatment of children under 10
Family Restorative – diagnosis and treatment (restorative and/or extractions) of older children and parents accompanying pediatric patients
General Dentist – Special Olympics Athletes – diagnosis and treatment (treatment and/or extractions) of Special Olympics athletes
Dental Assistant – Special Olympics Athletes – assist dentist working on Special Olympics athletes
Dental Hygienist – Special Olympics Athletes – cleanings on Special Olympics athletes
Prosthodontics – take impressions for and place treatment partials
Lab – fabricate, construct, make, or repair oral prosthetics, including treatment partials
Sterilization – sterilize all personal or MOM provided instruments keeping personal and MOM instruments separate
Central Supply – work in the central supply area assisting other volunteers in finding supplies they are looking for, need a fairly good understanding of dental supplies and dental terminology related to supplies
Dental Equipment Tech – help set-up equipment on Thursday, maintain dental equipment throughout the clinic on Friday and Saturday, assist in tear down Saturday afternoon/evening
Hygiene Support – help turn over chairs in the hygiene department by wiping down, running instruments to sterilization and gathering supplies as needed
Pharmacy – fill prescribed pre-medication, antibiotics, and non-narcotic pain medications onsite
EMT – assist patients requiring medical attention
Patient Education: Provide basic oral health care education to patients while they wait to receive care. Materials will be provided
Non-Dental/Medical Volunteer Position Descriptions
Volunteer Registration: Greet and check in volunteers
Crowd Control (security): Assist in keeping the patient line and waiting areas under control
Patient Registration: Greet patients, provide name tags, patient numbers and explain how the program works; direct people where they need to go to make sure they are seen in first-come, first-served order; and, distribute paperwork
Patient Ambassadors: Escort patients between various departments ensuring that no patient is ever left alone on the clinic floor, run other onsite errands as needed by department leads
Interpreters: Spanish and other translators will be needed in all departments to assist in patient communication
Patient Exit: Distribute patient goodie bags and assist patients with any questions regarding additional dental needs
Data Entry: Enter patient records into database to track completed procedures; assist as needed in filing patient records, this position does not require walking or standing
Hospitality: Serve and clean-up food service areas for patients and volunteers
Waiting Area Coordinator: Check in patients waiting for service after they have been triaged but have yet to be treated to ensure first come, first serve order in the department
Meeting Place: Oversee gathering area for family and friends to meet after they have completed their care. Help locate “lost” family members
Set-up: Tables, chairs, dental units, supplies, signs, volunteer registration, food service, etc.
Tear-down: Disassemble equipment, pack equipment and supplies, general clean-up, etc. Saturday evening
ADCF/Guest: Employees and board members of ADCF that will be in a supervisory or observation role; out-of-state MOM leaders/staff observing; future WDA MOM local committee observing (sign up for any specific jobs/shifts you want to do, no need to sign up for an observation shift – you are welcome to observe at any time, please indicate which meals you will attend
Restricted Volunteer Jobs (Only individuals that were specifically asked to register in these categories should select from these jobs)
Department Lead: Volunteers serving on the state MOM Committee or as an onsite lead or department second
Special Olympics Ambassador: Employees and pre-identified volunteers with the Special Olympics organization
PR Team: those identified by the WDA staff as part of the onsite PR team
Out-of-state licensed volunteers
All dentists and dental hygienists volunteering must have a current Wisconsin license.
Volunteers holding a license from another state may obtain a temporary, no-fee, charity permit through the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing.
