Your plan provides a basic map, including the “whats and whens” – goals are the “hows.” A goal is a desired end result, though isn’t always easy to achieve. Goals can be big or small and for each it’s important to know:
- Why is it important?
- Who or what will be impacted or involved?
- What happens if you don’t do it?
Knowing why you are establishing and pursuing a goal/set of goals is critical to setting yourself up for success.
Carefully crafted goals with supporting action plans will be the bulk of your plan. They are how change takes place. They are focused and detailed enough so that you know exactly how and when you are going to achieve them.
The best goals are SMART:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Action-oriented
- Realistic/reasonable
- Time-sensitive
Each goal should be specific and clear, have a measurement component (how you will know you achieved it), require action/effort, be reasonably attainable and have a timeframe attached to it. With this framework, you can craft some stellar goals to achieve within your plan.
For further focus and motivation try AIMing:
- Acceptable
- Ideal
- Minimum
Ideal is your ultimate desire; Minimum checks the box; Acceptable is somewhere in between. AIM provides a range to allow some flexibility – it is not meant to let you off the hook.
Finally, assess your goal/step through the lens of your overall plan. Does the goal help you get further toward your desired outcome? If not, you likely need some incremental goal modifications.
For accountability, it can be helpful to share your plan and goals with someone else. Not only can they provide feedback, but they can also help support and keep you on track. Now, AIM SMART and get to work!
