What made you decide to take advantage of the American Dental Association’s Member-Get-A-Member program?
When I first heard of the program, I felt it was more than overdue. Dentists practice the art of communication every day in our practices. We are very comfortable discussing tangible things with our patients, like the advantages of an implant or the need for periodontal therapy. We are also a social bunch of professionals, but discussing something as intangible as membership can bring us in to unfamiliar territory. That’s why the ADA’s Member-Get-A-Member Program is so valuable. It gives us the communication tools we need to discuss membership with a colleague in a positive, non-judgmental way. I have found that recruiting a non-member can be a slow process. You have to be patient and keep a positive attitude in your recruitment efforts. Just be your colleague’s friend. When the time is right for them, progress will be made.
How would you describe your overall experience?
Very positive – as I said before, the ADA has made materials available to state associations, local components and member dentists free of charge. Sometimes we need a little incentive to go the extra mile. The financial incentive is a nice motivator, either for yourself or to give back to the ADA or WDA Foundation. Makes me want to keep trying!
Would you recommend MGAM to a colleague?
Of course. The materials assist us, so when we are with our colleagues we can feel comfortable discussing membership.
How do you feel about being the only dentist in the nation to utilize the program in 2016?
Somewhat flattered, but more surprised than anything else. This is a great program that state associations and local components need to spread the word about. Our association cannot remain strong without the recruitment effort of each and every member dentist.
Most members say they are likely to refer membership to their colleagues, so this is your opportunity! You will be rewarded with a $100 gift card for each new, active member you recruit (up to five members or $500 in gift cards!) For full rules, visit ADA.org.
