One of the best things that has happened to me outside of dentistry was finding CrossFit. If you are anything like me, you have devoted your life to all things dentistry.
I was finding my “free time” was filled with board meetings for our local dental society, traveling to Dallas five times a year for my orthodontics course and traveling around the world several times a year teaching pediatric dentists how to do Zirconia crowns through a program called Sprig University, all while working full time in my private-practice pediatric office.
Before I knew it, I had gained 50 pounds, I was utterly exhausted and was starting to feel “burned out.” My husband did some research on different fitness programs to try and helped motivate me to get healthy again. He knows that I am competitive, I like a variety of workouts and I have limited time in the day. He came across CrossFit and found a gym that is one mile from our house and one mile from my office, so I instantly fell in love!
The workout of the day or WOD is different every single day, so I never get bored. They incorporate stretching, mobility, cardio, core, weightlifting and gymnastics all in a one hour class. And, the workouts can be modified for every age and fitness level.
The best part about CrossFit is the community of people. There is nothing more motivating then walking into a gym and seeing people of all different ages (13-65) and walks of life gathered together for one common goal — to be healthy.
I have now been doing CrossFit for almost a year. I have lost 55 pounds, but gained so much more. I sleep better, eat better, have more energy, have developed fitness skills I never imagined possible, come to work invigorated and head home to my amazing husband and daughters with a true sense of happiness. I am now the newest coach at CrossFit Sheboygan and I only hope to inspire other members as much as they have inspired me.
