Considered one of the finest mentor programs in the United States, the WDA, MUSOD and PFA collaboration is entering its 22nd year. Each fall, practicing dentists are paired up with dental students to establish a connection that benefits both.
Our Mentor Program is truly a “win-win” for both parties. Mentors share their experiences and expertise, while students provide the new perspectives of future professionals. In addition, mentors help their protégés network with colleagues and meet members of the dental community.

While the mentor program is structured to coincide with the academic year, it is not unusual for these relationships to continue for many years. Since its creation in 1994, the WDA-MUSOD-PFA Mentor Program has connected thousands of dentists and dental students. Over the years, there have been countless examples of practice partnerships and associate connections made through the opportunity to screen potential associates, partners and even buyers of practices.
The Mentor Program begins each fall with a kick-off dinner where protégés meet their mentors. This year’s dinner will take place at the Marquette University Alumni Memorial Union on Monday, Sept. 26. While other activities include continuing education programs and a MU basketball game, the real benefit of the program is the personal time spent at the dental office or just talking dentistry.
I would encourage all WDA dentists to consider being a mentor. With 400 students currently enrolled at Marquette, there are plenty of students looking to connect with a practicing dentist who is willing to help shape the future for an aspiring dentist. Heck, who knows, you might just find your new partner, associate or buyer!
