Recently, some dental offices have run into a problem with prescriptions, because some pharmacies have stopped filling prescriptions that don’t include the doctor’s Drug Enforcement Administration number. Listing the DEA number on prescriptions is a relatively new requirement and has many dental offices wondering what they need to do for their patients.
Previously, DEA numbers were not placed on prescription pads for fear of theft. But, according to the DEA Office of Diversion Control, prescriptions must include the following information about the prescribing practitioner:
- Full name
- Address
- DEA registration number
Therefore, dental offices should make sure DEA numbers are added to prescriptions to avoid any possible problems. Having the number typed or handwritten on the prescription will ensure the pharmacy will accept and process the prescription for your patient.
For more specific rules on prescriptions, please visit the DEA Office of Diversion Control’s practitioner’s manual website at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubs/manuals/pract/section5.htm.
